Mission of the College of Business Administration and Economics
NMSU's College of Business Administration and Economics is the college of opportunity presenting educational challenges through innovative programs consistent with the land grant tradition. As such, our mission is three-fold:
First, the college offers students, especially from New Mexico, access to high quality, reasonably priced professional education. The intent is to maintain a student population which is representative of the diversity of New Mexico. Opportunities for intellectual and professional development are available to business majors as well as others interested in business topics.
Second, working closely with our constituents, we offer relevant, rigorous programs, enabling our graduates to make valuable contributions during their careers. We continually seek to create new educational programs, delivery systems, and innovative teaching methods.
And last, as a land grant institution we accept our responsibility to serve a broad community. In this tradition we (1) deliver a broad range of high quality educational programs which satisfy student and employer needs; (2) discover, apply, and disseminate relevant business knowledge through research and publication; and (3) facilitate business and economic development in New Mexico and the region through the effective application of knowledge.
Requirements for Degrees
Students must have been formally admitted to a major before being eligible to apply for a degree in the college. Requirements for admission to a major are listed in the following section. In addition, students must complete the course requirements listed by the department offering the major.
Following is a checklist of other degree requirements:
* cumulative average of 2.0 in all courses taken on the university campus;
* cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 in credits taken in the college that are used to meet degree requirements. In business computer systems this rule extends to computer science courses;
* cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 in the credits in the college used to meet the specific requirements for the major;
* last 30 credits must be completed in residence at NMSU (at least 20 of these must be upper-division credits and 12 must be upper-division credits in the major);
* enrollment in a major of the college while taking any of the last 30 credits that are used to meet degree requirements;
* for transfer students, completion of at least 75% of the business credit hours required for the business degree at NMSU and completion of a minimum of 12 credits in courses required in the major taken in residence in the college;
* a minimum of 128 credits of approved courses.
A maximum of eight credits is allowable from the following three categories combined: music organizations (band, orchestra, or chorus), intercollegiate athletics (with no more than one credit in each sport) and occupational education (prefixed "OE"). A maximum of four credits are allowable in athletics and a maximum of four in music organizations.
The only courses that may be taken on an S/U option by students in the College of Business Administration and Economics are general electives outside the college. This does not include the courses listed below under general education requirements except that students may take up to 9 credits of honors courses graded S/U to satisfy these requirements.
Admission to a Major
Students planning to earn a degree in the College of Business Administration and Economics at New Mexico State University enroll in their freshman and sophomore years in the general prebusiness major and are advised through the college's Advising Center. Transfer students from other units of NMSU and from other institutions are also assigned to the Advising Center as prebusiness majors until eligible for admission to a specific major. All students except those pursuing the Bachelor of Arts in Economics are required to complete the requirements below. These requirements, which are listed below, must be substantially completed before the student is permitted to take upper-division courses (that is, those numbered 300 or above) offered by the College of Business Administration and Economics. A student who completes the courses listed below and those listed in the section for the individual major will have satisfied the university's general education requirements.
