CHSS - COMMUNITY HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES

CHSS 100. Introduction to Health and Social Services 1 cr.
Introduction to professional opportunities in nursing, social work, public health, community health, and environmental/occupational health. Graded S/U.
CHSS 101. Overview of Health and Community Services 3 cr.
Health and community service professions with emphasis on public health, community health education, and environmental/occupational health.
CHSS 216. Ethical and Research Issues in Human and Community Service 3 cr.
Ethical and legal responsibilities of health personnel with emphasis on research applications. May not receive credit for both CHSS 216 and CHSS 316. Branches only.
CHSS 260. Health Disparities 3 cr.
Explore a variety of health disparities specific to the U.S. and Mexico border region. Possible sources and intervention approaches will be addressed. Importance of taking an interdisciplinary approach to addressing such disparities will be considered. Course format will include lecture, problem-based learning, and service learning opportunities.
CHSS 295. Leadership/Mentorship Training for the CHSS Ambassadors Program 1 cr.
Leadership development for volunteers serving as CHSS ambassadors. Focus on public relations and CHSS undergraduate degree programs. Prerequisite: consent of instructor. Graded S/U.
CHSS 299. Service Learning Experience in Human and Community Services 3 cr.
Exploration of contemporary social, civic, economic and ethical problems that require student participation in collaborative efforts within the community. Requires 30 clock hours of community based service for each credit. Prerequisite: CHSS 101 or consent of instructor.
CHSS 300. Introduction to Human and Community Services 1 cr.
Professional roles in the human service industry. Offered in a distance education format. Overview of public health, community health education, nursing, and social work professions. Graded S/U.
CHSS 310. Medical Terminology for Health and Social Services Professionals 3 cr.
Understanding medical terms used to describe the human body in health and in disease, with application related to anatomy, physiology, pathology, and clinical aspects of nutrition.
CHSS 316. Ethical and Research Issues in Human and Community Service 3 cr.
Ethical and legal responsibilities of health personnel, with emphasis on research applications. Web-facilitated course, which may be offered also through distance education format. Same as CHSS 216 with differentiated assignments for students in CHSS 316, but students may not receive credit for both CHSS 216 and CHSS 316.
CHSS 399. Service Learning Experience in Human and Community Services 1-6 cr. (50P)
Exploration of contemporary health, social, civic, economic and ethical problems that require student participation in collaborative efforts within the community. This web-enhanced course will include bimonthly meetings. Requires 50 clock hours of community-based service for each credit hour. Prerequisite: consent of instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of 12 credits.
CHSS 460. Health Disparities and Health Interventions 3 cr.
Exploration of culturally adapted health intervention strategies designed to address health disparities.
CHSS 463. Interdisciplinary Seminar 3 cr.
Same as HL S 463 and MPH 563.
CHSS 470. Creation and Use of Media for Health and Social Services 3 cr. (2+2P)
Basic application and creation of media products in health and social services. Two hours of lectures plus two hours lab each week. Prerequisite: consent of instructor. Restricted to HL S, BSN, BSNC, BSNR and HCS majors.
CHSS 490. Independent Study 1-3 cr. (30P)
Individual studies with prior approval of CHSS Dean. Prerequisite: consent of instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credits.
